MAHAN Trust is a non-profit NGO working in Melghat, providing essential preventive and
curative facilities to tribals. It has created a significant impact on the lives of more than 5 lakh
tribal people who are subjected to extreme poverty, illiteracy, and lack of proper health facilities.
This organization was facing major electricity problems since the region had 18-hour power cuts
every day. In times of medical emergencies, the only alternative for them was to use diesel
generators. This was, however, both expensive as well as logistically difficult.
These were the problems that we tried to address when we began working on this project in
2013. We identified their requirements and accordingly installed a 2kW solar system. This
provides a 24-hour power supply to the hospital. We also provided solar lighting and solar fans
for the staff office, training halls, and associated buildings as well as streetlights for the
premises. Apart from these, we installed a 1 hp solar-powered water pump for their borewell.
The water pump provides water to around 20 families residing there.
Since then, MAHAN Trust has not faced any power-related issues. We are proud to have been
a part of this project and to have gotten the chance to work with an organization working on
such a fundamentally good cause in such difficult circumstances.
