More than 70 years after Mahatma Gandhi exhorted the country to take up the spinning wheel (Charkha) against the British, the inconspicuous Charkha seems to be causing another revolution.
More than 70 years after Mahatma Gandhi exhorted the country to take up the spinning wheel
(Charkha) against the British, the inconspicuous Charkha seems to be causing another
revolution. In a bid to increase rural employment opportunities, we in collaboration with the
Gram Sawa Mandal at Wardha developed a Solar Charkha. The Khadi and Village Industries
Commission (KVIC) now provides these Solar Charkhas to women in these rural parts. Unlike
the manually-operated Charkhas, the Solar Charkha does not require tiring physical labour. It
enables more production in less time than was previously possible.
The Solar Charkha has not only relieved workers from their grind, but also significantly
increased output and improved quality. This project for employment generation among rural
women has been possible due to numerous organizations and authorities. We will be forever
grateful for the valuable experience of being able to work on it.
